THEODORE KERKEZOS

Described by the Gramophone magazine as ...one of the most astounding performers of the day, Theodore Kerkezos has collaborated and recorded the entire repertoire for solo saxophone with orchestras including the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, The Philharmonia (of London), Boston Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, “Tchaikovsky” Moscow Radio Symphony, Moscow Soloists, Moscow Philharmonic, Symphony of Zurich, Berliner Symphoniker, Moscow Opera, Wiener KammerOrchester (Vienna Chamber Orchestra), Bucharest Philharmonic "G. Enescu", National Radio Symphony of Romania, Bilbao Symphony, Athens State Philharmonic, Thessaloniki State Symphony, Slovak Philharmonic, Slovak Radio etc. 

He works with Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Michael Nyman, Yuri Simonov and he has appeared at concert halls such as: the Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall-London, Carnegie Hall-New York, “Shostakovich Hall”-St. Petersburg, Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatoire, Tonhalle-Zurich, Opera of Rome, Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini, Athens Megaron Concert Hall, Beijing Concert Hall and Herod Atticus Theatre (Athens-Acropolis).

He was twice nominated (proposed by Naxos label) for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in the categories #102: Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra and #98: “Best Classical Album”.

He has been awarded in 2012 with the Honorary Doctor of Musical Arts from the IAACC/UNESCO, and in the same year the Great Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and Arts, unanimously elected him as Honorary Member of the Academy, for his outstanding services as performer and professor at the Russian and international music stage, an honor given to saxophonist for the first time. 

As a senior professor at the Athens conservatoire (1995-2013) and at the Nakas Conservatoire-Berklee College of Music-Boston (1991-2017 ), his advanced students around the world have received many Awards and distinctions. He is a visiting professor and has given master classes at the USA universities of: Boston, Princeton, Louisiana State, Southeastern Louisiana, Mansfield, Penn State, conservatories of: Boston, New England, Moscow State conservatoire, St. Petersburg State cons., Bratislava State cons., and at the Gnesin (Moscow), Bucharest, Chopin (Warsaw) and Kiev Academies.

Theodore Kerkezos graduated from the Athens Conservatoire-1871 (Babis Farantatos’ class) and continued in France with Daniel Deffayet and Jean-Marie Londeix. 

In 1999 he started a fruitful collaboration with the Alphonse Leduc Editions Musicales-Paris, writing books.for saxophone.

Works have been dedicated to him by leading composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Friedrich Cerha, and Mikis Theodorakis.

He was the founder, director and conductor of the Saxophone Orchestra of Piraeus Prefecture (2000-2010).

His discography with Naxos, Centaur and Onyx labels has won many prestigious awards.

He plays with H. Selmer-Paris saxophones, the "KERKEZOS" model, custom made for him under his direction.
